Another spike in Alaska cases of COVID-19: 145 residents, 14 nonresidents

Another 145 Alaskans have contracted COVID-19, one more Alaskan is in the hospital with the virus and 14 nonresidents who are visiting or working in the state have also tested positive for the coronavirus.

The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) today announced the 159 new people with COVID-19 in Alaska on its social media platforms and the Alaska Coronavirus Response Hub. Today’s case numbers were reported on August 1.

The 145 Alaskans who have contracted COVID-19 are residents in 19 communities. Anchorage has the highest number of new cases at 99. Eagle River and Palmer each have six. Wasilla has seven new cases. Chugiak have five new cases. Fairbanks, Northwest Arctic Borough and Wrangell each have three of the new cases. Cordova and Homer each have two new cases. One new case was reported in each of the communities of Bethel, Craig, Juneau, Matanuska-Susitna Borough, Prince of Wales-Hydaburg Census Area, Seward, Sitka, Valdez, and the Yukon-Koyukuk Census area.

The 14 new nonresidents who have tested positive for COVID-19 are in the state for purposes that are still under investigation. The Municipality of Anchorage and Fairbanks North Star Borough each have one case still under investigation. Kodiak Island Borough has three cases still under investigation. The state is reporting nine nonresident cases still under investigation in an unknown area.

DHSS reports today’s case numbers bring the total number of Alaskans who have had COVID-19 to 3,280, with 932 of them reportedly recovered. The total number of nonresident cases is now 704 and the total number of Alaskans who have been hospitalized with COVID-19 is 134.

Sixty-four of the 145 Alaska residents are male and 81 are female. Ten are children under the age of 10; 19 are aged 10-19; 29 are aged 20-29; 25 are aged 30-39; 21 are aged 40-49; 20 are aged 50-59; 15 are aged 60-69; three are aged 70-79 and three are aged 80 or older.

The state reports that 24 Alaskans have died due to complications caused by COVID-19.

Currently, 27 patients are in the hospital with COVID-19 and an additional 12 patients are considered persons under investigation (PUI). That brings the total number of current COVID-related hospitalizations to 39.

Health officials have conducted a total number of 243,090 COVID-19 tests statewide. The average percentage of daily positive tests for the previous three days is 2.48%.

DHSS announced its data dashboard will undergo a change in structure that will go live on Tuesday, August 4, 2020. The new data structure will allow users to filter COVID-19 case data by occurrence and residence status.
