60 new COVID-19 cases in residents, 11 nonresident cases, one hospitalization

Sixty more Alaskans have contracted the coronavirus, one more is in the hospital and 11 nonresidents have tested positive for COVID-19.

The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) today announced the 71 new people who have COVID-19 on the Alaska Coronavirus Response Hub. Monday’s new cases were recorded on Sunday, June 12.

The Alaskan residents live in 17 communities. Anchorage saw the highest number of new cases at 28. Fairbanks has 11 of the new cases. Wasilla has four new cases. Chugiak has three. Eagle River and Bristol Bay and Lake & Peninsula boroughs each have two new cases. One new case of COVID-19 was identified in each of the communities of Bethel, Bethel Census Area, Girdwood, City of Kenai, Kodiak, NW Arctic Borough, Palmer, Seward, Soldotna and Utqiagvik.

Alaska’s total number of cases is now 1,539. Eighty-seven Alaskans have been hospitalized with COVID-19, including yesterday’s hospitalization. Seventeen Alaskans have died from the disease but there were no new deaths reported yesterday.

Eleven new nonresidents also tested positive for the virus. Municipality of Anchorage has eight new nonresidents with COVID-19. Two tourism industry workers, two workers in an “other” industry and four workers in an unknown industry tested positive for COVID-19. Fairbanks has two new cases: one visitor and one worker in an “other” industry. The City of Kenai has one nonresident case in a worker in an “other” industry.

The number of nonresidents working in or visiting Alaska who have tested positive for COVID-19 now totals 306.

Twenty-Nine of the 60 new Alaska residents with COVID-19 are are male and 31 are female. Five of them are children under the age of 10; eight are aged 10-19; 16 are aged 20-29; 15 are aged 30-39; four are aged 40-49; nine are aged 50-59; one is aged 60-69 and two are aged 70-79.

Five more Alaskans reportedly recovered from the disease yesterday, bringing the total number of recovered cases to 620.

Heath officials have conducted a total of 146,590 COVID-19 tests statewide. The average percentage of daily positive tests for the previous three days is 1.89%, which is the highest rolling average the state has reported in more than a month.
