New COVID-19 cases: 39 Alaskans, 10 nonresidents, two new hospitalizations

Thirty-nine more Alaskans and 10 nonresidents working in the state have tested positive for the coronavirus. Two more Alaskans are in the hospital with the disease, bringing the total number of hospitalizations to 98.

The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) announced the new cases today on the Alaska Coronavirus Response Hub. The latest cases were recorded on Thursday, July 16.

The 39 Alaskans who have contracted COVID-19 are residents in 13 communities. Anchorage has the highest number of new cases at 17. Wasilla has four new cases. Eagle River and Juneau each have three new cases. Fairbanks, Seward and Sitka each have two new cases. One resident tested positive for COVID-19 in each of the communities of Chugiak, the City of Kenai, Kenai Peninsula Borough North, Meadow Lakes, Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area and Soldotna. One pending case from July 15 was also added to the state’s count. Alaska’s total number of cases is now 1,733.

In addition to the new resident cases, 10 new nonresidents were tested positive for COVID-19. Three seafood industry workers in each of the communities of Juneau and Valdez tested positive for the virus. One tourism industry worker in the City of Kenai contracted the virus. Sitka City and Borough reported two cases under investigation in Sitka. DHSS also reported one case under investigation in an unknown location. The total number of nonresident cases is 348.

Fourteen of the 39 new Alaska resident cases are male and 25 are female. Five of them are aged 10-19; 13 are aged 20-29; 11 are aged 30-39; seven are aged 40-49 and three are aged 50-59.

To date, 17 Alaskans reportedly have died from COVID-19. There were no new deaths reported on Thursday.

New cases of the coronavirus continue to outpace recoveries. Nine more Alaskans have reportedly recovered from COVID-19 on Thursday. Recovered cases now total 697.

Health officials have conducted a total of 165,414 COVID-19 statewide. The average percentage of daily positive tests for the previous three days is 1.53%.
