80th Alaskan hospitalized, 49 new COVID-19 cases

Another Alaskan has been hospitalized with COVID-19 and 49 new cases of the virus were recorded yesterday. Forty-six of them are Alaskans living in 12 communities across the state. Today’s case numbers were collected from 12:00 a.m. until 11:59 p.m. on July 8.

The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) today announced the new cases on the Alaska Coronavirus Response Hub. Alaska’s total number of cases is now 1,272 and the total number of hospitalizations caused by COVID-19 to 80. Anchorage has the largest number of new cases at 21. Fairbanks has seven. Wasilla has four. One new case was recorded in each of the communities of Kenai, Palmer, Soldotna, Bethel, Eagle River, Homer, Nome, North Pole, Petersburg, Seward and Sterling.

Health officials also identified three new nonresidents cases: one seafood industry worker in Kodiak Island Borough and two cases in workers of unknown industries in unknown locations. Nonresident cases now total 251.

Twenty-two of the 46 Alaska residents are male and 24 are female. One of them is a child under the age of 10; two are aged 10-19; 13 are aged 20-29; four are aged 30-39; eight are aged 40-49; nine are aged 50-59; five are aged 60-69 and four are aged 70-79.

To date, 17 Alaskans have died from COVID-19 and there were no new deaths reported yesterday.

Also yesterday, eight more Alaskans have recovered from the virus, bringing the total number of recovered cases to 571.

Health officials have conducted a total number of 135,744 COVID-19 tests statewide. The average percentage of daily positive tests for the previous three days is 1.24%, which is up from the 1.06% average percentage reported yesterday.
