Record-breaking one day COVID-19 case count: 51 residents

Today, Alaska saw its highest one-day jump in resident cases of COVID-19 at 51, with four new nonresident cases among seasonal workers in the state.

The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) today announced the 55 new cases on the Alaska Coronavirus Response Hub. Today’s new case data was recorded from 12:00 a.m. until 11:59 p.m. on July 9.

Thirteen communities around the state have been affected by the new cases. For the second day in a row, Anchorage had 21 new cases. The spike in cases comes 10 days into Mayor Ethan Berkowitz’s Mask Mandate. Fairbanks has 14 of the new cases. The City of Kenai has three cases. Homer, North Pole and Wasilla each had two new cases. And one new case was found in each of the communities of Eagle River, Juneau, Nome, Nome Census Area, Palmer, Seward and Willow.

Alaska now has a total number of 1,323 cases of COVID-19.

Four new nonresidents also tested positive for the coronavirus. Among them are two seafood industry workers in Bristol Bay and Lake & Peninsula boroughs and one worker in an unknown industry. The Matanuska-Susitna Borough had one tourism industry worker who also tested positive for the virus.

Nonresident cases among workers and visitors to the state now total 258. State officials corrected the dates of three previously reported cases, which added to the total number of nonresident cases.

Twenty-nine of the 51 Alaska residents are male and 22 are female. Two of them are children under the age of 10; eight are aged 10-19; 16 are aged 20-29; four are aged 30-39; six are aged 40-49; eight are aged 50-59; four are aged 60-69 and three are aged 70-79.

To date, 80 Alaskans have been hospitalized with COVID-19 and 17 Alaskans have died from the disease. There were no new hospitalizations or deaths reported yesterday.

Seventeen Alaska recovered from the virus, bringing the total number of recovered cases to 588.

Health officials have conducted a total number of 141,931 COVID-19 tests statewide. The average percentage of daily positive tests for the previous three days is 1.46%, which is up from 1.24% reported yesterday.
