New COVID-19 record: 63 resident cases, 5 hospitalized, 14 nonresident cases

Sixty-three more Alaskans have contracted the coronavirus, five more are now in the hospital and 14 nonresidents also tested positive for the virus.

That’s according to the case numbers the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) announced today on the Alaska Coronavirus Response Hub. Today’s numbers reflect case data that was collected on Friday, June 10.

It’s the highest single-day count of resident cases since the pandemic first appeared in Alaska and 12 cases more than yesterday’s record-breaking count of 51. And new cases continue to outpace recoveries. Ten Alaskans recovered from COVID-19 yesterday, bringing the total of recovered cases to 598.

Alaska’s cases of COVID-19 now total 1,385. Eighty-five Alaskans have been hospitalized and 17 have died from the disease. There were no new deaths recorded yesterday.

Anchorage also had the highest jump in resident cases at 29. Fairbanks has 23. Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area had two of the new cases. One new case of the virus was recorded in each of the communities of Bethel, Eagle River, Houston, Juneau, Mat-Su Borough, North Pole, Palmer, Seward and Soldotna.

Fourteen nonresidents also tested positive for the virus yesterday. In Anchorage, two of those cases were visitors and two were workers in an unknown industry. Two workers in an unknown industry tested positive in Bristol Bay and Lake and Peninsula boroughs. Seven mining industry workers tested positive in Southeast Fairbanks Census Area. One worker in an unknown industry reportedly tested positive in Nome.

DHSS officials corrected an error in reporting a nonresident case as an Alaskan resident on July 6. That correction and today’s case numbers bring the total number of nonresidents to 273.

Thirty-three of the Alaskan cases are male and 30 are female. Four are children under the age of 10; five are aged 10-19; 22 are aged 20-29; 11 are aged 30-39; nine are aged 40-49; six are aged 50-59; five are aged 60-69 and one is 80 years or older.

Health officials have conducted a total of 143,376 COVID-19 tests statewide. The average percentage of daily positive tests for the previous three days is 1.45%.
